I don’t know what I loved most. I shouldn’t have waited to process to write this, but what a beautiful exploration of grief and guilt and the way love really can be so powerful.

TW: heavy themes of grief and death.
This was such a well done, dark, supernatural mystery. The magic is well written and artistically used. There are multiple characters processing parental death in different ways that are tastefully explore but may be triggering to readers. I very much enjoyed this book

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this one. I think I'm just let down because this wasn't as creepy/horror filled as I was expecting. It was solid though, with a nice blend of contemporary mystery with a sort of unique Southern Gothic horror flair.
The characters were interesting (although there was a bit of insta-love & friendship going on). I really liked Shady and how she was conflicted between her feelings for her best friend Sarah and popular guy Cedar, her love of her family and bluegrass music, and her determination to uncover their secrets and prove her brother innocent made for an interesting read. I even want go listen to bluegrass now (this book begs for a soundtrack listing).
Readers looking for stand alone books or slightly creepy mysteries may like this one.

Grab a copy of GHOST WOOD SONG by Erica Waters when you're in the mood for a YA ghost story that effortlessly combines family dynamics with teen angst/romantic emotion, a murder mystery, bluegrass music, and plenty of chilling (even murderous) haunts. For me, the book was a fast read because (1) I was totally in the mood for a teen ghost story, and (2) it's atmospheric and a different take on hauntings.
I think author Erica Waters tells a solid story, hits the right emotional notes, and writes several chilling scenes filled with tension and ample frights. The romance thread works on multiple levels, and I thoroughly enjoyed being immersed in the world of Shady Grove and her special fiddle that can call ghosts. It's definitely a book I'll reread and I recommend it as one you should totally add to your October list of spooky reads.

It’s been a while since I’ve read a really good ghost story and this didn’t disappoint. I loved the atmosphere and how the mystery unfolded. The characters were very well fleshed out, everyone had their flaws but that made them feel real. Well, everyone but Cedar. He was the too perfect love interest that’s in nearly every YA book, but his sincerity and sweetness was so endearing so he’s forgiven for that. The only thing I disliked was that some of this love triangle drama felt so unnecessary and out of place with the rest of what was happening. Overall, I definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a good spooky read. 4.5/5
I fell asleep listening to this audiobook then had nightmares about it... 8/10 spookies.
