Enjoyable. Adams retraces the route of the Harriman expedition of Alaska, relating both that peculiar journey’s history and his own modern experiences.

I thought it was interesting. The title is a little deceiving. Much of the book is devoted to Alaska's history, politics, ecology, people and quite a bit of the historical expeditions. I would have liked more of his present day personal observations (which I enjoyed) and more journey's inland.

I really enjoy reading about AK in general and this was no exception. Most AK books hit the big cities, so one reason I liked this was because of the mention of villages, some of which my husband or I’ve been to!

Adams retraces the 1899 Harriman expedition which had all the scientific superstars of the day to include John Muir. He alternates between his expedition and Harriman’s. Lots of eccentric and quirky encounters as well as an abundance of epiphanies and an over abundance of OMG moments from past and present. It’s just coastal Alaska though but its enough to enchant you and motivate you to visit.

I really enjoyed this book but there were definitely parts that dragged. The truth is I think that the expedition he was writing about wasn't that fascinating but Mark Adams' trip was interesting. In the past I haven't been too excited about Alaska but this book changed my perspective and I would very much like to visit Alaska. I am intrigued by the history of Alaska and also by the the people currently living in Alaska. It is definitely a different kind of living!
