Underneath it all, lolita contains a wretched, beating heart. This book is alive.
A beast that is born when the covers are open and rests (but does not die) when they close.
I feel H.H watching me.
I feel Nabokov watching me.
Do not lose yourself in the sirensong this text sings.
The true message of Lolita is thus,

True Art, like Love, is only really felt in the embrace of insanity.

A dreadfully, stupendously, mind-numbingly tedious tale of a codependent pedophile, which could have been three times shorter, and twice clearer for the fact. This so-called masterpiece of literature should be in place of a sleeping drug. A pretentious and trivial tale of a social case, diluted with some Russophobic undercurrents and unbearably smug commentary on most insignificant events and things. Nabokov was just another logorhheic twit who duped the world into thinking he was some genius. I am really disappointed having ever got my hands on this book, as the time spent on it was better spent on watching the grass grow, or basically anything else.
dark tense

This book is beautifully written and the story captivates from begining to end. It makes your skin crawl and you stomach turn but you just can't put it down.

This was quite an unsettling book, especially when the 13 year-old Lolita says « mais si papa, on est amant » or when the dad, as Lolita is sick, writes « abandonnant l’idée de lui faire l’amour ». You realise that some people are completely crazy, but also how a child’s naivety can be manipulated by adults into making them do disgusting things. Overall, I thought it was an interesting book though I would’ve liked the ending to be slightly more elaborated and exciting.
