This is the sort of book, obviously, that is likely to provoke a raised eyebrow. Its subject matter is pretty toe-curling, and in the hands of a lesser writer the result might have been horrific. It's so good though. The way he holds you, for page after page, caught between sympathising with the anti-hero and knowing that he's a monster; the way he magically produces comedy from the most unpromising raw materials; the way he strings a sentence together - holy crap!
Coming back to Lolita, in audio format, I was reminded just how much a good reader can add to a story. Jeremy Irons reads this and I can't imagine anyone better.

Pienso en bisontes y ángeles, en el secreto de los pigmentos perdurables, en los sonetos proféticos, en el refugio del arte. Y esta es la única inmortalidad que tú y yo podemos compartir, Lolita.

Un libro fácil de malinterpretar pero una vez leído es una obra maestra. Es una lectura muy difícil con un personaje bastante complejo cuyas acciones arruinan la vida de una pobre niña, completamente perturbador.
