I didn’t expect to like this book as much as I did but I loved it. The characters were raw & gritty, the writing was tight, and the arc felt just right.

I'm in awe with this book. The beginning was great, yet as soon as I got around to page 75, this book sucked me in. The novel depicts a lovely story of three women struggling to to live by their ideals, which are all mostly unconventional. Readers get to see the POV of four different characters, all of which are equally enjoyable. Will recommend this novel to others.

This book was weird. I put it on hold after seeing it somewhere and went into it not knowing anything about the plot. After the first page I was a little worried about what I was getting into but I ended up enjoying it. I occasionally struggled with the different viewpoints as some of them sounded similar. I also didn’t enjoy the child’s viewpoints as you really got the perspective of a kid who has no understanding of how things truly function which is not something I’m interested in reading.

interesting to read a book with flawed characters, all likable and unlikable for their own reasons. living off the land, deglamorized.

It’s not exactly what I was expecting but still good. There are sections of chapters told by different characters, occasionally that became had to follow. Other than that the book discusses heavy topics like the foster care system and oil pipelining projects. Would say it’s a good read with you can imagine living off the grid!

a tale of chosen family and self-sufficiency—and blood and guts and shit. starts slow but pulls you in by the end. lyrical and voicey without being pretentious. unlike anything i’ve ever read!

i loved this one so much. perley’s voice was my very favorite. i laughed out loud so many times reading his part. ugh, loved this one a lot.

The book's characters are in and of themselves prickly people, and the writing matches that. It seems to hold you at arms length, like the family trying to make things work on coal company land. This is a great perspective of child-rearing, of independence, of trying to be something when the world thinks you're nothing. I enjoyed this book, especially Perley's 7-year-old descriptions of his best friend.
