Incredible incredible book. Gripping, unique, special. Hard to put down. No time was wasted on backstories or lengthy character development, making them all the more complex. A strong sense of setting despite having very little clue where in Appalachia this story takes place. Timely themes, timeless tropes. A little gay too!

I think I loved it

a raw story about a queer couple and their chosen family based in appalachia <3

incredible novel about what it means to belong and the “right” way to live a life and how there are always wrongs within this. i really loved this book. the characters had so much depth and were so well written. ffitch’s ability to switch pov’s between so many different types of characters and do it so thoroughly is refreshing and engaging as a reader!

i was a little nervous around 2/3 of the way through to find out how the story would wrap up but it all worked out how it was supposed to with a well-thought-out ending and the elevated prose and implied meanings consisted throughout. i’m sure i will read this book again and it was a great way to end this year’s reading.

So glad this book is over. It has the whiniest characters in existence. Storyline was useless. Idk what the fuss is over this book. Save yourself some time, and do not read this. Perley is the dumbest name.

This was great! It reminded me a lot of the movie Captain Fantastic but with more lesbians and realism. Wonderful characters and lush visuals. This book also gave me a renewed perspective on the concept of unschooling which I wasn’t expecting

I don't know how i feel about this!!!
I felt very caught by the story and read it all in a few days of vacations, never wanting to put it down... yet I also have many complaints.... very torned !
- It's hard for me to enjoy stories where all the character despise each other, ESPECIALLY when you're supposed to believe that's a queer chosen family, it would of been such a good opportunity to portray alternative love and care but no they hate each other
- Same goes for good parenting, it was pretttty bad and you just kinda wanna save the kid so you're not rooting for them to thrive
- The BEST part of this was definitely the chapters from the kids' pov, incredibly well-written, engaging and funny, which is why you care for him the most!!!
- Loved the added layer of ecoterrorism and political comments very well done
See?? pros and cons for sure

also!
why did i see a trans storyline emerging and then disappearing into a weird straight romance?

I thought the synopsis of this book seemed so interesting and I was really looking forward to this book but it just wasn’t my cup of tea and really fell short for me. If I was a person who could DNF a book I probably would have quit with this one.

this book was close to being a 4, but it was a bit too all-over-the-place to earn the fourth star. however, it was very heartfelt and queer - two things i always appreciate. it emphasized that there is a lot to be said for meeting people where they are, even if you don’t understand them.
