Loved it!
This book was so much fun to read! I loved the escape room computer game aspect because my husband and I enjoy going to escape rooms. I’m looking forward to reading more books by this author!

3.5 stars...I did not want to read this. My 12yo picked it as our read aloud. I ended up enjoying the twists and turns of the game, and my kid really liked it. Pleasantly surprised!
A teacher recommended this book and I am so glad she did. It has fun characters and a great plot involving escape rooms and computer games. I also liked the added insight into life as a Japanese Jewish person, especially learning more about the brave Japanese soldiers who fought in WW2 after their families were sent to internment camps. Ted’s great uncle passes away and he (along with an old friend and a new friend) must solve a real life escape room to find a treasure. Along the way he learns about his uncle’s past. The humor is spot on. Fans of mysteries or puzzle books will enjoy this fun story. No swears, and some very mild violence.
I wasn't sure about this book when I started, but ince it built up some speed I couldn't put it down!!! A really great middle grade that combines a mystery with a tale of friendship. It ties in some classic literature, some good old noir, and a little history and sculpts a truly great story!!
I really enjoyed this book, with its mixing of online "escape the room" puzzle games and the character's treasure hunt. I look forward to more in a similar vein if they're forthcoming.

Loved it! Great mg mystery! Loved the dynamic of the 3 main characters!
I can see that this story is going to have lots of appeal to the gaming crowd. Ted, and a couple of friends, Caleb and Isabel, try to solve the video game type puzzle of Ted's great uncle's apartment, which might lead them to a potential treasure.
The book is loaded with suspense, adventure, literary connections, and information about Japanese American soldiers during the Second World War.
I like that the story has a satisfying end, but there are enough unanswered questions, and potential for more action in further sequels.

This book had a lot of elements my students and I LOVED. Giving it 3 stars rather than 4 because the ending felt a little rushed. There were some lose ends we wanted addressed and we wished there were some clues that flowed a little more organically.
That being said, this was a really fun book for us to use as a read aloud! My students loved all the contemporary brands and items in the book and adored the humour. Thank you!

Oh, what an easy sell this book will be. A mysterious inheritance from a dying relative that a tween boy must discover by solving escape-the-room type puzzles? Yup, kids will gobble this right up. It's extremely compelling and exciting and I loved the historical details as well (the dead relative served in the all Japanese-American regiment during WWII and there is information about the Monuments Men in here). I think kids will be prompted to learn more about the facts behind the historical information in here. I didn't love the female character here - too much time spent discussing how "perfect" she was - but otherwise, this was a very enjoyable read.
