My first Oscar Wilde piece and I really liked it.
My English Literature skills kicked and I found myself analyzing the play as I was reading it. I guess my analytic skills are still with me.
What I liked about this piece was the way Wilde was scrutinizing the Victorian society on the way of morals and hypocrisy. Jack Worthing creates his alter ego 'Ernest' as a way to keep an honorable image in the Victorian society but he is hypocritically deceiving others by creating this alter ego for himself. He thinks that by being 'Ernest', he can keep up his honorable image of Victorian convention whilst also being able to do stuff he wouldn't dare to under is true identity.
I also think identity plays a big part in this play, as Gwendolen is sure of the fact that she would love no one else if they were not called Ernest, so Jack takes on this identity as a way to win the heart of the woman he loves. Algernon also takes on this identity as a way to win Cecily over, deceiving himself to be Jack's brother.
All in all, I found this piece very interesting to read and can't wait to read more of his works.
