Is it weird I actually liked the Afterafterword (by RADWIMPS's Yojiro Noda) more than the novel? It helped me understand and come to terms with the ending of the movie, which was what spurred me to read the book to begin with.

Though the story is interesting and the anime movie beautiful, the book is not as good.

The narration is messy, jumping from one scene to another and confusing the reader. It was like reading the script without the in the middle part. Which is unfortunate, as the story is solid.

The truth is I tried quite a few times to pick this up and continue it, but the narration stopped me every time.

So, I'm dropping it. But the movie is still superb.

“Who cares if we don't see the sunshine again, I want you more than any blue sky."
The line that got me to have that emotional moment while watching the film, I still remember getting goosebumps.
Finally caved in and watched the film a couple of weeks ago, afraid I wouldn't like it like I didn't really vibe with "your name". But... I liked Weathering With You. Not an awful lot like some of Shinkai's previous ones, but a great deal more than "your name".
I felt like reading the novel after watching the film took away some level of immersion I was supposed to get because at certain scenes I just kept thinking how much better it is in the film. Shinkai even talks about it in his closing note, specially about the ending. So my suggestion would be, read the novel first and then watch the film :)

I FEEL THAT the story falls flat without the emotions expressed through motion-picture.

This review came after watching Suzume and puzzling over the story. Here's my conclusion: Makoto Shinkai makes insanely good films, playing with aspects of sound and visuals with a combination of an easily digestible story that you can easily empathize with.

This easily digestible story that you can easily empathize with loses its power without that gripping sound design and mind-blowing visuals.

The movie is good; the story is also nothing to scoff at.
But when words are your only media, you've got little to work with.

Yep, I cried all over again.

After seeing this one in theaters, I wasn't sure what to think of the light novel, especially after picking up most of his other ones before watching the movie, but this was fantastic. The energy is there, packed within this short volume, and I can't wait to find more of these.

Very slow start and read too much like a play by play of the movie it's based on, which I haven't seen so found myself quite lost. Already struggling this early on, I thought it was better to cut my losses.

DNF-ed. Very slow book. Shallow characters, thin plot, and poor writing. It's sometimes confusing to figure out who is talking. This is like the movie script written down almost exactly, which makes it lack interesting content because it is without the movie's imagery. The movie was just okay in my opinion, and the book is worse. :( Wish I could have finished, but it's just not worth my time, and I gave it 50% before stopping.
