This is a lovely little collection of poetry. I enjoyed the themes around which the poems were arranged, and while I wasn't blown away by the depth of the poetry, there were some bright little moments.

Was not the same as my experience w his “I wrote this for you” but still Iain S Thomas.
4/4 stars-
this book was by far one of the best rupi kaur style poetry books i’ve read in a while- and not because it was rupis style. most books with this poetry style are straight rip offs- same outlines , same feelings. this book actually used figurative language to go in depth into the feelings rather than “i’m sad because ___” it uses metaphors and actual ideals rather than basic poetry. much like rupi, they describe the feelings in depth rather than just deciding to remake rupis but blander. it didn’t feel like a repeat which is really so hard to do with this style of poetry.
overall would recommend <3

These poems were beautiful. So many resonated with me. Some made me so emotional. They were wonderfully written. The illustrations were beautiful too.

Iain. S. Thomas says at one point:
“If you make anything sad enough
or true enough,
people will call it a poem.”
and the proof of that statement is this very book. I’m tired of reading basic sentences that lack imagery, rythm, alliterations and frankly any other poetic device, in which someone hit the return key a couple of times and then called it a poem. I don’t always vibe with the format of modern poetry but I’ll ignore it if I at least find an intelligent thought or a well written sentence or interesting word use. This was unfortunately not the case. It’ll have to be a no from me.

Modern, non-rhyming poetry is usually a hit or miss for me; when it’s done well, it really connects with me, but when it’s not it usually ends up being fairly anticlimactic. Luckily, the former is the case with The Truth of You.
Despite many of the poems exploring fairly straightforward subject matter, this poetry collection does an excellent job of bringing a fresh perspective to the common themes of sadness, love, joy and navigating life. It perfectly straddles the line between crafting poems that are relatable and easy to connect with, and incorporating a deeper perspective or new exploration of the topic at hand to keep things interesting and avoid compiling a surface-level, generic collection.
One element I most appreciated about this collection was that none of the poems felt like throwaways. Though not even poem was a favorite or particularly resonated with me, they all felt well-crafted and thoughtful, rather than added in to reach a page goal, which I’ve unfortunately encountered with some other poetry collections.
Overall, I’m excited to give more of Iain S. Thomas’s poetry collections a try. Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I liked it, not loved like most of his work. He had some pretty amazing poems throughout but this book felt rushed to me.
