I had such high expectations for [b:Afterlove|48656848|Afterlove|Tanya Byrne|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1593609204l/48656848._SY75_.jpg|73999811] because I'd heard rave reviews and it reminded me of Before I Fell (a movie I love).

But I just don't understand what the point of the story was, other than exploring death from the perspective of the person that died.

I thought the execution was immature and the romance was way too insta-love. These girls only knew each other for a day before they fell head over heels!

It bothered me that Ash hardly shed a tear for the family and friends that she would never see again, but was willing to risk everything for a girl she hardly knew.

The moral of the story felt cliche and there were a few scenes that added no value to the story, other than for the author to make a point about how the LGBT community is even discriminated against in predominantly liberal places such as Brighton.

This is important to know, of course, but not relevant to the story.

Hat sich am Anfang ein bisschen gezogen, aber dann wurde es noch echt gut und süß und spannend und ja, würde empfehlen👍🏼

Heartbreakingly beautifully written.
I cried several times and I’m so amazed by this book.
Definitely worth it.

This book was sweet, tragic, heart wrenching, and heartbreaking, and I really enjoyed it! It felt like "Annie On My Mind" by Nancy Garden meets the tv series "Dead Like Me," with some interesting post-death concepts about people becoming reapers and getting "assignments" by Post-It (I'm pretty sure this is directly from "Dead Like Me"), with the tragedy of being separated from someone you've just exchanged "I Love You's" with, and some exploration of class differences and privilege of being born a rich white girl (Poppy) vs. Ash's Guyanese family living in Brighton, UK.

Extremely readable, quick, and pulls on the heartstrings. Definitely give it a read for a nice, sort of sad, queer YA romance.

From reading the synopsis, you think you'd be prepared for the emotional devastation of this book and YET! I loved the fantastical elements of the story: the grim reaper aspect was done fairly well, the cast of grim reapers was interesting and unique. The relationship between Ash and Poppy was definitely the hallmark of the story; their romance was mushy and sweet, all the more devastating when Ash falls victim to a car accident! I'm disappointed that Ash's previously life completely becomes irrelevant after her death, singularly focusing on Poppy (personally would've LOVED to see a snippet into what happened with her family and her best friend honesty! The side tangent with her dad not knowing she was queer felt so useless to the plot if its never addressed ever again?). But overall, the writing was compelling and the characters were enjoyable, I'd read more from Tanya Bryne for sure!

I went into this book 100% blind (which is rare for me). It was read based on title and aesthetics alone but I’m so glad I finally got around to plucking it off my TBR pile. It took a trope I’m usually so-so about, Insta-love, and made me fall instantly in love with it. It could be the unexpected half-way point twist that I didn’t know was coming (again, went in blind), but I thought the story was so fresh and witty yet heartbreaking and beautiful all at the same time. I felt the fear and panic when it came off the pages as well as how smitten the characters were with each other. It was painful when New Year’s Eve unfolded. So much so, it felt as if I was personally involved in their lives, not just a spectator reading from the pages.

Whoa this was so good! One of my most anticipated releases of the year and boy was it as good as I hoped it would be. The characters are amazing (I may or may not have a slight crush on Esen) and the storyline was so cool and unique if a bit predictable at times. This is one of my new favourites, please go read it!!!
