Much like Katniss Everdeen, Coriolanus is a chronic overthinking queen—and I to admit it, but I related a lot to that part of him 💀
What I didn’t relate to, though, was his entire personality (and thank God for that). He wants to be seen as this hero, this great big guy, when in reality he’s just so anxious and on edge all the fucking time. Most importantly, though, he’s just fucking awful. Like seriously rotten to the motherfucking core. He’s egocentric, narcissistic, and just downright horrible. I felt so angry and disgusted reading the story from his POV, with all of his sick and twisted thoughts—thank you, Suzanne Collins, for being such a great writer. He is written exactly as Donald Sutherland portrayed him in the movies and I think that’s amazing 🫶
Not to turn this into a movie review, but I felt that all of his sick and twisted personality was completely wasted in the movie 🥲 Not shown at all.
I don’t know if it was the fault of the writers, the director, or maybe just Tom Blythe’s acting, but young Coriolanus in the movie didn’t seem all that bat shit crazy, evil, and deranged to me. Sure, he turned bad in the end, giving us that glimpse of the villain that he’ll become—the bastard we all love to hate. But it was so badly portrayed in the movie. Tom Blythe didn’t really give us the great acting performance that could have shown Corionlanus’ complex inner-thoughts and turmoil. Instead, I felt as though they were trying to give him a redemption arc that lasted for over two-thirds of the movie. So, you could imagine my surprise when he just went all bat shit crazy and tried to gun down Lucy Gray. Like—why would this guy, who seemed a little off, sure, but otherwise alright, turn into this monster all of a sudden? Totally my fault for watching the movie before reading the book, but I was glad I did come around to read it! The book portrayed him so much better, like the evil scum and villain he had always been.
My only critique is that I wished it had been a little shorter. Like—did we really need to read that much of Coriolanus’ inner-monologue nonsense before the actual games began? It was nice to get an insight to his godawful personality, but... 200 pages? I don’t think so 🤷♀️
As Sue Sylvester once said: Enough with the jibber-jabber. Sing something (Lucy Gray)!
Most of it was just him hating Sejanus for no real reason (other than not being able to grasp how someone could actually show human emotions, unlike himself, which he found to show weakness), hating on his cousin (I love you, Tigris) and Lucy Gray for possibly having to do some sexual favors to survive the war—which, God forbid, a great deal of women might did. But no, it disgusted him, not in a way that inspired empathy in him, but because he now saw them as “dirty” (what a fucking misogynist). Oh yeah, and let’s not forget him being absurdly horny for the first pretty girl he’d seen in ages and “falling in love” with her—not because he actually cared about her personality, but because he fell for her performance and loved the idea of owning her 🤠 God knows I hate to see a straight, white, cisgendered man win, so to know that Snow, in the end, won’t land on top and will eventually get overthrown by a girl who constantly reminds him of Lucy Gray, makes me really happy 🥰

Realmente no esperé que me gustara el libro, porque odio a snow. Aun así, le aplaudo a la autora por escribir desde su punto de vista y hacerlo disfrutable

A really well written insight into the history of President Snow and his descent into the man he was in the original trilogy. The pacing was a little awkward at times and the last third is by far the weakest part.
The audiobook could have been produced better. There were occasional lines that were obviously cut in from a different recording session as they were a different quality/volume to the rest of the reading. Also, the way the narrator spoke through the lyrics was really rough and awkward to listen to and did not translate well at all - if the narrator cannot sing/singing couldn't be incorporated, then the lyrics could have been read as a poem.
