There are some interesting takeaways, but nothing super novel that I hadn't heard before. If you are looking for a quick read that combines Biblical truths and the power of optimism, gratitude, and all things positive, it's worth reading.

My biggest takeaway is to Interrupt your anxious thoughts spiral before you start spinning out. The author clearly points out this is not a cure all for medical depression or anxiety but a tool for those who tend to let their minds run away. There was some interesting brain science and tools but I was hoping for a little more meat. I think the many supplemental tools that go with this probably round out the picture a little more. Overall a timely and important read.

I thought it was pretty cheesey/cliche at first, but ended up getting something out of it.

SO GOOD. WOW. Get Out Of Your Head is a Christian powerhouse of a book. So often I find myself looking at scripture and my anxiety and wrestle with how to speak the peace of God’s word into my human experience and this book did just that. Jennie Allan beautifully brings scripture into her writing to further her points of finding peace, joy, and fixing our thoughts. One thing that really stood out to me in this was Allan’s clear messaging on therapy and (sometimes) medication. In the past, when reading Christian “self-help” style books such things are either completely avoided or looked down on while Allan advocates for the importance of such things which speaks directly to my (and I hope other peoples’) hearts. I also loved that she gave practical exercises that has the reader reflect in real time on their thoughts. Many of her techniques are rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy but the addition of biblical wisdom was wonderful.

I thought this was good but I also think I was in the right state of mind to read it. I tried to read it about a year ago and didn’t finish it.

I think she had some solid points and advice but nothing too different than what’s been done before. But I like her personal anecdotes and how she’s talking both from her personal experience and biblical truths.

Get Out of Your Head had an interesting premise in that a strong believer went through a season of doubting God and how she recovered from it. I have been on a faith journey myself so this content seemed right up my alley. There were some good takeaways but some of it felt a little surface level.

Here's my issue with this book. Jennie Allen went through a massive 18 month season of doubt, she prayed and fasted for a day, then chose to trust, and never doubted again. It just didn't feel like she went through any actual work or wrestling with her faith. Now she's written this quick fix self-help book for your thought life. Some of my highlights from the book were to choose gratitude, to not let cynicism rule your life, and to serve others instead of myself. All very good reminders for my day to day life.

I think this book and Jennie Allen have a very specific audience. But at this point in my spiritual life, I need something more.

Jennie Allen makes me think and I really enjoy the voice that she speaks with to do it. I read this book as part of a study and each chapter really had quite a few thought provoking topics. From "keeping every thought captive" to "I have a choice [regarding what I want to think about]", there were good nuggets throughout. Even the mind map was useful when I didn't think it would be. As a side note, there's also a study by the same name on Right Now Media but I got SO much more out of the book than I did with the videos.
So go read it and GET OUT OF YOUR HEAD!
