This isn't my favorite Joshilyn Jackson novel. It's probably not even in the top three. It was lacking climax. However, I did still enjoy the story. She does a good job weaving in different time and places to give you a good sense of the character. If you are looking for a beach read that leaves you wondering about the people who aren't lucky enough to get "beach reads", pick this one up.
4.5 I have definitely become a Joshilyn Jackson fan. Her story-weaving gets better and better with each book. She flips back and forth between Kali/Paula at 12 and currently, where we slowly learn/guess her background story. What great characters! Her protagonist has so many flaws - making her so real - that you love her and hate her and question her... keeps you busy throughout the whole novel! I listened to this one, her brand new book. I usually greatly enjoy her reading, but the voices she used on this one, other than Cali, Kai, and Birdwine, were a little bothersome. She made her 23-year old brother sound around 12, and I had to keep resetting his image in my mind because of this. Very engrossing.
Halfway through the first CD, I audibly gasped and thought, 'Oh no! I've discovered the formula!'
Tough, keep-your-emotions-down woman who has contentious relationship with her mom eventually discovers her mom loved her/fought for her/protected her all along. And the woman is also avoiding a relationship with the guy who is best for her, but eventually realizes he's best for her and they get together.
Knowing the formula doesn't make the book any less good. I love this author. I love to listen to her narrate her stories on audiobook. She is a damn fine writer!
This is the first of her books where I didn't figure out what the title meant in correlation to the book (which is likely just user error).

Interesting and well-written, though I had trouble staying focused. Some of the story never quite meshed for me—I realized after finishing it that this is the second book featuring the main character Paula and I was probably missing some important context.
Enjoyed the book and it’s characters and loved the sweet, satisfying ending.
To me, this book was one giant cliche after another. It might be okay for some readers, but I didn't find much to enjoy here.
