An unmitigated gem of a story
Jackson is an incredible writer and somehow she just keeps getting better.
This novel was a delightful journey between present meeting past and a daughter finding her beloved mother through the scars she left in the inbetween times.
A beautiful story about a fierce heroine with a fragile and unexpected heart of gold.
Loved this story from page one. And gobbled the rest, savoring all its loveliness at breakneck.

I see there are rave reviews and I just don’t understand why. When I read the last word, I was grateful. I was not a fan.
This was a perfect one to read in little chunks before bed. I was a little slow getting into it but came to really enjoy the mystical storytelling, changes in pace and place and time, and slow character development. The ending was beautiful and made me cry in the most satisfying way. I look forward to reading more by this author.

“The Opposite of Everyone” is a story about a tough, Atlanta, divorce lawyer, Paula Vauss, who believes that her life will stay put together as long as she is tough and untouchable, never realizing that her put-together life is about to fall apart in truly tragic, but wonderful ways.
I enjoyed this book very much. I liked the main character, Paula Vauss, because she is very tough, but also, very vulnerable and she knows it. I believe her best character trait is that she knows herself well, and understands that real life exists in varying shades of gray. The cast of supporting characters are perfectly sweet, scary, crazy, strong and highly entertaining.
Although I’ve been meaning to read a Joshilyn Jackson novel for quite some time; this is my first experience with her writing … I will be coming back for more.

Contemp fiction group pick - interesting characters who were complex without being contrived. A good reminder that all of our souls are broken in some way.

Perfect. Brilliant. Beyond amazing.
Joshilyn Jackson has quickly gotten herself into my top 5 favorite authors. This is my third novel I've read by her, and as with the others it's given me all the feels.
I didn't connect with the protagonist right away (similar to some of Jackson's other novels) but by the end I understood her and was rooting for her. I love the way a new, unusual sort of family was pieced together out of so much brokenness. It was so beautiful and moving! There were lots of tears with this ending.

The only thing I didn't like was the cultural appropriation Kai does, but also the uncomfortable feelings I have in a white author using Hinduism (a religion not a mythology to all the readers calling it mythology here) to spice up her novel. The story itself I enjoyed and I think could've spent more time in its world.

Sometimes Jackson's books are a little hit or miss for me--but this one was definitely a HIT. It centers on a woman, a high-powered attorney in Atlanta with a rough past, who has a lot to deal with when some family secrets start to emerge. I was one hundred percent rooting for her the whole time (and also one hundred percent rooting for her to get with her love interest). There's also a great, and wholly satisfying, ending. If you need a book about a badass lady getting stuff done, and also some emotional catharsis and crying, pick this one up ASAP. A/A-.
