I struggled to really connect or get into this book at any point. The concept was interesting and I enjoyed learning about an aspect of WWII that I previously did not know about. However I felt like the book mostly plodded along and the ending didn’t give it any oomph either.

I loved the setting of West Virginia and a regal hotel. June was a fascinating main character. The historical elements of stranded diplomats was fascinating. Hannelore’s story was sad but very interesting. I loved Tucker Rye Minnick and how his story came out slowly. And the Sandy twist!

Found myself completely engrossed in the complicated social spiderweb of the world we glimpse through the prose of this book; felt it all the more acutely for how familiar the thoughts and feelings of June and Hannelore were to me. And of course, Maggie Stiefvater knows how to give us magic that is terrifying and wonderful, and it’s deployed here without ever overwhelming the depth of her historical research.

Rating might’ve gone even higher if
June and Tucker had gotten to fuck nasty instead of getting blue balled three - THREE! - times. (This is mostly a joke, I actually thought it was extremely funny and in line with the story that they kept getting interrupted by historical events and shit.) I hope they had the time of their lives in Pensacola after all this. It’s what they deserve.
