Might become a five star once I’ve had more time to let it soak in.
This was genuinely one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read. It was well paced, had great suspense, characters that were compelling and complex. I loved it.
I’m usually not a huge fan of WWII fiction just because I feel like a lot of time it ends up being trauma porn but this book was really well done and it helped that there aren’t a million and ten other books centered on hotels in Appalachia that hosted nazis. I didn’t know about this piece of history until I read The Listeners and was super intrigued on this fresh story.
The writing was so rich and original, the story moved like syrup but in an absolutely delicious way, twisting around itself and wrapping readers up in its layers.
Ugh, loved it!

This whole book feels complicated to review.
The writing is wonderful as always, it covers a fascinating history I wasn’t aware of before, has a magical system that gradually reveals itself, along with formative backstories.
But it’s still a big ask to weave magic into a historical event that involves Nazis and Axis diplomats. If this were a spy novel, it would be too sloppy. If this were a fantasy novel, it would be too subtle.
But I liked it. The pacing starts off slower than dirt, and there are way too many characters. But I really liked the main character June, kind of a West Virginian Jane Eyre who makes better choices. And though the characters are all murky, keeping their cards close to their chests, things wind around to surprising reveals and a satisfying ending.
