One of my most anticipated books of the year, I don't think I would have been interested in this at all if it had been written by another author. It's set in a high-end luxury hotel which has to house Japanese, German and Italian dignitaries just after Pearl Harbour. I loved seeing the through-notes that resonated with themes in TRC, like intention and having it reflected back to you by a slightly magical natural reserve, and the idea of finding someone who makes the world quiet.

DID NOT FINISH: 22%

I was just so… bored. I get that the book was trying to be a character study, but for me it utterly failed because I didn’t care about any of the characters. They all bled together. & I didn’t care about the plot.  It was too historical about things I didn’t care about. I expected more poetic writing, but instead I got blanddd characters. I couldn’t suffer through the rest.

I love Stiefvater’s writing but this just started so slow for me (maybe I’m out of practice with historical fiction)… once I got to about midway it finally started to pick up. Interesting area of history to explore though
