“David Copperfield” is, by far, the best Dickens book I’ve read. Granted, it’s long and if you have the patience to read it, I personally believe you won’t regret it. The character development from David as a little boy to the end as an old man reminiscing about his life on pen and paper is intriguing and very clever. The setting, plot, and characters that help the story flow and, surprisingly, made me care about what is going to happen to David Copperfield. But Dickens is known for his amazing work on the elements of a good story, so I shouldn’t be too surprised

I used to have difficulty with Dickens because his fiction seemed a bit too broad in its characterizations and plot, dominated by flat characters and obvious plot manipulations, but I am so glad I gave him another try. The use of flat characters and dramatic plotting are still the rule in this novel, but it is I, as the reader, that has changed. I loved the protagonist of Copperfield, and likewise loved so many of the minor characters of the book, and it did not matter that they were written to a "type," because they were still so fun and enjoyable to read. Likewise with the plot - it wasn't subtle, and there were lots of twists and turns of fortune, along with a number of powerful coincidences, but again that made the novel fun to read. I rooted for David Copperfield throughout the book, and was happily transported whenever I opened its pages, and so that is great enough for me. I have thus officially graduated from my own brand of MFA school snobbery in which I wanted every character to be round, and every plot to be subtle. Bring on the fun books!

I love this book. I sometimes rate it as my favourite ever novel, although I can't quite pin down why exactly.
I've heard that some of this was semi-autobiographical, and I think this tightens the focus of an otherwise sometimes rambling writer. It has his trademark eccentric characters with weird names and his progressive (by Victorian standards) moral viewpoint.
