This is a fine way to introduce a new character, although it could be lengthier to accommodate the plot twists. The twists are reminiscent of those in "The Second Hostage."

this is a novella introducing Colter Shaw. I read it after the novel, the Never Game. I am glad I did so as the novella introduced him and the premise and had a pretty good story but not sure it would have been enough to make me commit to the novel which I did enjoy. I would recommend reading this story only because it gets mentioned in the background of the novel and the plot is good but doesn't humanize Colter like book does.

This was a nice length for a short story - long enough to get to know the main character and build suspense in the story, but short enough for everything to be wrapped up quickly. I'm looking forward to reading the new novel featuring this new character, Colter Shaw, and this story is the perfect introduction to that character. Colter is an interesting character and even though this is a short story, there were still plenty of the surprise twists that are Deaver's trademark.

Solid 3.5 stars. Not a bad intro to a new character. The mystery wasn't as compelling as some of Deaver's others, but it was good.

Unabridged audiobook through my local library.

Short story introduction to this authors series of books. Predictable private eye investigating missing wife story with twists you could see a mile away. Unfortunately not gripping enough to invest time in the full stories.
