Exhilarating. Devastating. Hopeful. I have a love-hate relationship with non-linear narratives but this book would not have worked out any other way and I stand by that. I don't know what else to add except READ THIS BOOK EXPEDITIOUSLY!

I loved this so so much. The pacing, the characterisation, the plot. I thought the characters were very interesting and complex, and I enjoyed how the plot was woven back and forth to provide insight into the characters past and present lives. The story also is an insightful exploration of how (internalised) racism and colourism impact the lives of black people and their communities in a variety of ways.

I don’t know why, but when I first heard of this book, I thought I wouldn’t be interested. In reality, it is practically made for me: a mid-century historical fiction where the narrative changes perspective. That’s right up my alley. I loved the way this was written and the way the plot unfolded. My one complaint is that it felt like Desiree didn’t get as much development compared to other characters. Still, I truly loved this, and I would highly recommend it.
