Loved this book. Set in literary world. A book is published but no-one has met the author. Then murders described in book start to actually happen. Wonderfully crafted plot with murder mystery at heart.

Brilliantly crafted, intelligent and beguiling, The Readers' Room is an example of masterful storytelling and intriguing prose. It is one of those books that you would be compelled to finish in one sitting, a mystery you would yearn to be solved immediately.
This is the story of a manuscript review department of a Parisian publishing house, fondly called the readers' room, which deals with the sudden arrival of a debut crime novel. The book is sure to be a hit, and the staff of the readers' room predicted that it might win a highly touted literary prize. What they did not count on is for the events of the book to clearly reveal the details of the real-life murders of prominent figures in the community.
With the police involved in the publishing of the book, Head of Manuscript Services Violaine Lepage is forced to examine the life of the elusive author, and also the events of her past. Violaine soon realises that there are details reminiscent of her past that are laid out in the book. As she attempts to fill in the gaps of her own history, the police starts to link the murders in the book - and in real life - with the only person who has communicated with the author, Violaine herself.
I have always been a huge fan of mysteries, and I was very intrigued by the way the story unfolds. Laurain ingeniously scattered the twists and turns, making the reader process and fit each piece of the story gradually, as though solving an actual mystery. I loved how everything was cryptic, which brings to mind Hemingway's iceberg theory. I am eager to read more of Laurain's works.

Were the first Part of the book as interesting as the rest, it could have been four stars. Perhaps it was the translation.

Normalerweise sprechen mich derart gestaltete Bücher nicht an, aber als ich den Rückentext las, war ich sofort interessiert. Es klang für mich nach einer Suche durch Paris nach einem mysteriösen Autoren - wie liebreizend! Ein perfektes Buch für jene, die Bücher mögen.
Leider war das Buch so ziemlich das Gegenteil davon. Grundsätzlich hat der Autor kein schlechtes Buch geschrieben, vor allem die Auflösung am Ende fand ich sehr gelungen. Auch die Einblicke in die Arbeitsabläufe eines grossen Verlages fand ich spannend zu lesen. Unter anderen Umständen hätte ich dem Titel vielleicht eine bessere Bewertung gegeben.
Hier kommt jedoch das grosse Aber:
Nicht nur spricht Laurain vieles an, ohne in die Tiefe zu gehen, was zu einer verwirrenden und oftmals lose wirkenden Erzählung führt (zum Beispiel die Szene mit der sinnlosen Super-AI) - was mich enorm gestört hat, war die irreführende Vermarktung des Buches durch den deutschen Verlag.
Meine ersten Eindrücke und somit die Erwartungen an das Buch habe ich eingangs bereits geschildert. Hiermit erweckt der Verlag leider einen völlig falschen Eindruck dieses Werks.
Weder ist es ein Wohlfühlbuch, noch ist es eine Liebeserklärung an das Lesen. Dazu eignet sich nur schon die unsympathische Hauptfigur absolut nicht. Auch wenn die anderen Figuren auch nicht unbedingt besser dargestellt sind.
Auch das der Handlung zugrunde liegende Thema, das sich offenbart, ist nicht für jede lesende Person geeignet. Schon gar nicht, wenn sich eben jene Person auf etwas völlig anderes eingestellt hat. Da ich eben erst ein Buch zum angesprochenen Thema gelesen hatte, wollte ich davon eigentlich erst einmal eine Pause einlegen. In Amerika würde diesbezüglich anfangs eine Triggerwarnung stehen.
Deshalb war für mich persönlich die Lektüre dieses Buches von Frust geplagt und eine entsetzliche Enttäuschung. Nur die Kürze des Werks hielt mich davon ab, es abzubrechen. Wer jedoch mit einer anderen Erwartungshaltung als ich an das Buch herangeht, kann damit einen interessanten und faszinierenden Leseabend verbringen.

This was a light and fluffy thriller set in the publishing industry. An enjoyable read although the ending was vaguely predictable and the concluding letters were lazy.

steif und kreuz und quer was den Plot angeht. gute Idee, hätte besser umgesetzt werden können. Persönlichkeiten machen ein 360 Grad Verwandlung ohne, dass man es mitkriegt
