Cute! The unfinished sketch look of the line drawings is charming and whimsical, and the color pops beautifully when it shows up. I was concerned I wouldn't be able to read the handwritten text, but it was really pretty legible.
I was expecting a little more of a narrative, but instead it's a series of pithy one- or two-page affirmations. I found myself snapping photos of several of them along the way. But really I just mostly empathize with the mole and his love of cake ;)

Truthfully, about 30 minutes into the book, I had to check whether I had accidentally borrowed a children’s book. It took me longer than it should have to realize this book was a kind of tumbling metaphor.
The structure and execution of this book reminded me of another I had read back when I was studying for my Bachelor’s - The Old Woman, The Tulip, and The Dog, by Alicia Suskin Ostriker (though imo, I found Ostriker’s poems to be pretty funny).
Mackesy’s work is subtle, simple, and (eventually) easy to digest.

The drawings are really pretty and evocative and cute, the messages are somewhat pretentious to me but like, a couple of them are nice on their own. My favourite drawings are the one inside the cover, with the four of them on sheet music: The jumping horse is gorgeous and really captures the essence of a horse.

(This book was a gift from a friend)
For anyone going into this withou knowing anything about the book: this is not really a story book, it's more like a collection of quotes. Every page has a very short conversation between the characters that conveys an inspiring/thoughtful/comforting message. That said, I think might be dead inside because other than a few light chuckles, I felt nothing when reading this (I also think I just don't like motivational/self-helpy books). The quotes just felt a little too unoriginal and generic, I feel like I've seen most of them floating around the internet with slightly different wording.
The drawings are wonderful though, really cute and messy and very well done.
