Gwyneth is a ordinary girl living in London, England until she finds out that she has unwittingly inherited her family's time traveling gene. This story is a fast-paced read with an intriguing plotline. Gwyneth's character is naïve yet gutsy and her normalcy makes her even more likeable. The mystery involved around the time travelers is not revealed in this first book, so readers will be dying to find out what comes next... I know I am! I really couldn't put this down.

3 1/2 stars. This was the book my teen daughter and I read together this month. It is her favorite series and she wanted me to read it too. I ended up enjoying it more than I was expecting to and look forward to continuing on with the series with my daughter.

Oh, my!! I didn't expect to like this. I loved this, in fact! Stories with an aspect of time travelling is somewhat something I'm very picky about. I don't exactly know my criteria about this kind of book myself, but I just knew I liked it when I do. And I'm very glad I ended up liking this a lot.
There is so much hanging questions inside my head after reading the first book, and I found myself wanting to pick the second book up as soon as possible. Maybe I will, after writing this review. The only thing that I like less than the other things is the possible instalove between Gwyneth and Gideon. Or maybe not? Well, time travelling really confuses my mind with time.

♠ Tanto per cominciare un sentito applauso alla madre di Gwendolyn per la furbizia. Cioè, la tua famiglia è portatrice di un abilità che si tramanda di generazione in generazione da centinaia di anni e speri di evitarla mentendo sulla data di nascita di tua figlia? Complimenti. Si vede che con tuo marito l'avevate studiato bene questo piano. Usano un metodo infallibile per riconoscere i 'prescelti' e tu ti affidi alla speranza? Quale speranza? La speranza è morta nel momento esatto in cui Gwendolyn è nata. Non è che se chiudi gli occhi, ti tappi le orecchie e ti volti dall'altra parte allora quello che temi non succede. Poi si arrabbia pure quando la criticano per la stupidaggine che ha fatto, cosa dovevano farti, i complimenti?
♠ Siccome questa sembra essere una prerogativa degli YA, vorrei che qualcuno gentilmente mi spiegasse perchè TUTTI i protagonisti maschili di queste serie sono degli stronzi che trattano la protagonista di turno con sufficienza, fanno battutine odiose che fanno venire voglia di prenderli a calci sui denti, deridono in un modo non tanto velato. Perchè? Piacciono gli stronzi, ok, d'accordo nulla da dire. Ma possibile che non esista un ragazzo in questi libri che sia semplicemente gentile? Senza il bisogno di fargli fare battutine sprezzanti da super figo? Senza renderlo bello ma stronzo? Vorrei leggere di un protagonista bello e gentile, chiedo troppo? E se proprio deve essere stronzo che lo sia fino alla fine, che si innamori della ragazza ma che resti fondamentalmente uno stronzo e non un tipo che si scioglie e diventa un budino quando si innamora. Ma anche un tipo semplicemente coerente andrebbe bene, che se mi tratta da stronzo adesso non fà tutto il carino e il gentile 10 minuti dopo. Nessuno si comporta così. Cos'è successo in questi 10 minuti? Cos' hai un disturbo della personalità? Dimmelo almeno lo so invece di chiedermi costantemente quale cavolo è il tuo problema. Tra l'altro lui si 'innamora' di lei perchè è completamente diversa da Charlotte e dalle altre ragazze che si chiudono in gruppo nei bagni a spettegolare . E questo lo ha capito perchè gli ha salvato la vita disobbedendo ai suoi ordini (cit.) dopo che si conoscono da quanto? 1 giorno? TIPO NO.
♠ Ho trovato anche la storia dei guardiani e del gene molto superficiale, cos'è questo gene? Perchè solo certe famiglie lo hanno? Come fate a sapere che è un gene se non si riesce a vedere dalle analisi o dagli esami? Che senso ha viaggiare nel passato se non si può fare niente? Lo so che la regola universale dei viaggi nel tempo è "non sconvolgere gli eventi", ma se davvero si può tornare indietro solo fino ad una certa data che senso ha? E poi perchè si può tornare indietro fino ad un certo punto? Qualcuno ha ma provato a superare il limite? E poi cos'è questa storia che non si può andare nel futuro perchè non è ancora accaduto? Che senso ha? Non è ancora accaduto per noi ma qualcuno dal futuro potrebbe tornare indietro al nostro presente, come fanno Gideon e Gwendolyn tornando indietro nel presente di qualcun'altro, il ragionamento del 'non è ancora accaduto' fa acqua da tutte le parti. Futuro e presente si muovono parallelamente, quindi si dovrebbe essere in grado di viaggiare anche nel futuro...
♠ Ho finito questo libro in 5 ore, più o meno, facendo lunghe pause ogni 4/5 capitoli per cercare di farlo durare più a lungo possibile. Inutilmente perchè il libro scorre bene, troppo bene. In 15 capitoli non succede nulla. Lo so che il primo libro di una trilogia è quello più descrittivo e meno accattivante ma c'è un limite. L'unico avvenimento di tutto il romanzo è Gwendolyn che scopre di essere l'addetta ai viaggi nel tempo. NIENT'ALTRO.
♠ In compenso ho amato il fatto che lei citasse continuamente titoli di film e attori durante il libro perchè da grande fan di film e serie tv è quello che faccio io, costantemente.
♠ Menzione speciale per la pelata di Mr. George, nominata talmente tante volte che mi aspettavo prendesse vita e parlasse da un momento all'altro.
Altra menzione speciale per Madame Rossini. Posso averla come mia stilista personale?

3,5⭐️ Ik heb dit boek gekocht in 2011, toen was ik 10 hahah. Maar toentertijd nooit gelezen, omdat ik steeds niet door het eerste stuk heen kwam. Nu was ik in mn kast aan het kijken welk boek ik wilde lezen en dacht, ik geef hem toch nog een kans.
Als ik dit boek vanuit het perspectief van een 10/12/14 jarige bekijk, is dit best een leuk boek! Het leest makkelijk weg en het is een leuk verhaal. Voor mensen van die leeftijd zullen er ook veel herkenbare stukjes qua vriendschap en liefde inzitten. Het hele gedeelte over tijdreizen kan best complex zijn en sommige stukjes begreep ik daarom in eerste instantie niet helemaal, maar dat wordt vaak later nog eens uitgelegd, waardoor je het dan wel begrijpt. Het eindigt wel met een open einde, dus ik ben blij dat ik het tweede deel ook nog heb liggen zodat ik in één keer verder kan lezen

I can't believe this book went so quick!
The pacing was smooth throughout as the book subtly introduced us to the rules of time travel. Not a lot happened action wise, however we did get introduced to an abundance of characters as well as a fuck ton of mystery.
First off, I just want to say that it was so refreshing to read a book set in London, a place I'm personally familiar with as it's where I grew up. The descriptions and how they spoke just made me smile as it's something familiar, especially compared to a lot of the books I read which typically use American terminology or are set in the US.
I loooooved Gwen - it was lovely to read about a British protagonist going through the motions of school, like any normal teen. She was heart felt, genuine and I found myself really relating to her. I really enjoyed her ghostly interactions and how regardless of who she was with, she'd talk to the ghosts anyway. It was pretty funny and endearing.
I think her ability to talk to ghosts is perhaps linked to the 'Raven' people keep mentioning, as I'm pretty sure they typically play a part when representing the dead. And as the Ruby, she finished the Circle, perhaps representing the end and death in turn.
The whole setting for the story was like a warm drop of honey gliding down my spine as I couldn't help but feel comfort when I was with Gwen and her family. Her 'Mum' (I'll discuss the quote marks in a sec, I have a theory) as well as her Great Aunt Maddy and siblings all made me so happy. And LESLEY, she was such a brilliant, level headed character.
These members of her family, I think, were the eye at the centre of the storm. They really grounded the story with some realism as the plot gradually became a lot more complicated. And emotionally straining.
By that, I mean all of the mystery shrouding the Count and the whole organisation which is keeping Gwen (and the reader too obvs) painfully in the dark, as well as her cousins shitty attitude and the way everyone keeps putting down her abilities of common sense. It seems that everyone in that fucking organisation thinks that just because she hasn't had the training, that must mean she's a complete invalid. What obnoxious asshats.
Charlotte and her mother were horrendously frustrating in particular and made me want to beat the living shit out of innocent objects. Damn them.
They treated Gwen like shit from the start and I understand that learning Charlotte wasn't The Ruby was hard to take, but they thought it was completely acceptable to just keep putting Gwen down again and again.
I think they need a fucking slap, if I'm honest. I can't wait for Gwen to shut them up because she will become an ultra bad ass. She will.
Going back to her 'Mum' - I don't think Grace is her mother, I think Lucy is and Paul is her dad. It makes sense that they were on the run, stayed with Grace and had the baby and then left after.
AND I think the Count is fucking with Gideon's head and it's so corrupted. This whole thing is rigged and Gwen is ganna sort it out.
I'm not 100% on board with Gideon as the love interest, so I hope he shows his true colours more and we get more interactions between the two in the next book.
I've heard the plot really picks up in Sapphire Blue, so I'm looking forward to getting into it :)
