The premise of the book sounded good, but the story didn't deliver.

Ailesse is a bone crier, and is the daughter of the matriarch. Her job is to lead her people in helping soul crossing over, after she proves her devotion to the god of the underworld by killing her mate. Sabine is her best friend. She too is a bone crier, but can hardly stomach killing anything. Bastien wants revenge. A bone crier killed his father, and now he wants to make them pay. When Ailesse, Sabine and Bastien's paths intertwined, they discover there is more to the story of the bone criers and humans, and people close to them are keeping secrets that can destroy all of them.

This was such a good book. It was a quick and easy read and I really fell in love with the characters. I love that there were three POVs throughout the book. I can’t wait to read the second.

July 2021 reread:
My second read through this book went better than my first. I really liked the concept and overall plot of this book - it’s different than other fantasy books I’ve read. And there was this interesting theme of believe every all the tales you hear, but it’s juxtaposed with this idea that your perception of something isn’t the whole story and can be skewed, which I reallh enjoyed reading. There’s wonderful chemistry in the romance, and there’s sisterly bonds which were also nice to read. Plus that cover is just stunning, I’m obsessed with the artwork! Definitely a recommended read.

I really enjoyed this book. I wasn’t sure what to expect and so wasn’t expecting much. There was a lot of twists and turns and I really appreciated that as it kept me guessing, nothing I guessed was right. There was a lot of action and intrigue and it kept me interested right from the start. I didn’t feel like it was lagging or slow, it felt very well paced.
