July 2021 reread:
My second read through this book went better than my first. I really liked the concept and overall plot of this book - it’s different than other fantasy books I’ve read. And there was this interesting theme of believe every all the tales you hear, but it’s juxtaposed with this idea that your perception of something isn’t the whole story and can be skewed, which I reallh enjoyed reading. There’s wonderful chemistry in the romance, and there’s sisterly bonds which were also nice to read. Plus that cover is just stunning, I’m obsessed with the artwork! Definitely a recommended read.

I really enjoyed this book. I wasn’t sure what to expect and so wasn’t expecting much. There was a lot of twists and turns and I really appreciated that as it kept me guessing, nothing I guessed was right. There was a lot of action and intrigue and it kept me interested right from the start. I didn’t feel like it was lagging or slow, it felt very well paced.

I actually liked most of the plot of the book and it's ending. I liked the storyline with the Bone criers more than the one with Bastien and Alesse, which I found kind of boring until the two merge at the end. I liked the mythology in this book and hope we get to see more of it in the next book. I adored Sabine character, her development and determination in saving Alesse. I really didn't like Bastien and a big part of the reason why was the narrator in the audiobook, I didn't like how he told the story (Alesse and Sabine's narrator were fine). Other reasons are that is development was rush and was annoying with he's revenge. I didn't believe nor ship Alesse and him. Their relationship just happened. There was no development and It went directly from enemies-to-lover in a manner of a few pages. I didn't see any chemistry or how they could have fallen in love. I liked Alesse characters on the other hand and liked her relationship with Sabine (they had more chemistry (in a sisterly bond way) than Bastien/Alesse). The writing was okay and the world's building was well writing and easy to understand. My only issue was that the French in this book didn’t make sense even if some of the words were made up, it still didn’t make sense. Also, can I protect Marcel at all costs, he's so innocent and doesn't look like he belonged in the middle of everything.

I really wanted to like this book. The idea and pretense were so interesting and the magic system also seemed cool. But the story itself was rough and I found myself not really wanting to finish it. Because overall it just didn't hold my interest.

Ailesse is determined to complete her trials and become a Bone Crier, ferriers who protect the living from the ghosts of the dead. And Bastien is determined to kill the very Bone Criers who killed his father. So on the night of her final trial Ailesse summons her true love, only for her true love to be the very boy determined to kill her before she kills him. Interwoven in this story is family secrets, found family, and two gods who's end game is unknown.

The magic system in this is one of the more unique magic systems I have come across. Bone Criers derive magic from the bone of animals they kill. But the rest of the story was filled with petty juvenile jealousy and just bad plot points. Sabine's storyline let us see the internal workings of the Bone Criers while Ailesse was abducted. But the underlying jealousy Ailesse has at the end for Sabine just didn't make sense when both girls couldn't stop trying to get back to the other. The borderline insta-love between Ailesse and Bastien made less and less sense the longer the story went on as well when it was obvious he is in love with Jules.

Overall I am not finishing this series. I read the reviews for the next book and if I have to deal with petty jealousy for another book I will lose my mind. I get that this is a YA book, but you can write YA without making fifteen love triangles and jealousy between girls over a boy.
