It kind of felt like Townsend didn’t know how to progress the wider story in a meaningful way, so she wrote a book that was a complete and unnecessary tangent. (Spoilers head) It didn’t move the plot forward, and didn’t answer any of the big questions; namely, why is Squall training Morrigan, what is he so afraid of? Townsend completely forgot what story she set out to write and decided to just write a murder mystery instead.
More things I didn’t like:
- has everyone forgotten that Squall is a mass murderer?? He’s kind of become this grumpy pseudo father figure and comes across quite likeable
- why have so many family members suddenly appeared for Morrigan in Nevermore? I don’t like that it took away the idea that she’s a refugee and has found family and made a life for herself in a new country. Don’t worry guys it’s ok, her family is actually from Nevermoor so she does really belong.
- Jupiter had all the answers Morrigan had been looking for all along - it was all just a case of bad communication between the two…really? 500 pages just for that?
- just casually adding in time travel to reverse things that have gone wrong?? It felt lazy, and I don’t think Townsend thought through what implications adding super-easy-time-travel will have in the future.
I loved the first few books and I re-read them all in anticipation of this new one. Really, very disappointed.

Tried to read this more slowly so I could make it last, but I still reached the end much too soon. Another wonderous installment in the Morrigan Crow series. Worth the (long!) wait, though I do hope the next one comes along much sooner. Surprised to find myself weeping at the end—I love Jupiter so much. I’m so curious to see if my growing suspicions about Squall turn out to be true…

The wait was sooooo worth it! This installment brought us back into the wonderful world of Nevermoor with our cast of favorite characters - but the world and the people grew is realistic and wonderus ways.
The journey of self discovery that Mog goes on felt realistic for a 13 year old. Watching her and her friends interact, growing her wondersmith abilities, and solving a murder!
This was a great start to the second story arc of three books. The only downside of finishing this book is that I greedily want the next.
