Don't go into reading this book for a fun "take your mind off things" read. Perhaps my review of it is so poor for that reason. I was between two very busy semesters in college and purchased this book as an easy read. I had not read any of Gregory Maguire's books before so I didn't know what I was in for. It is heavily laden with strong political themes and issues. There were very dark and strange parts to the book. I just wasn't in for the politics when I decided to read it. My roommate however loved it and has read all of his work. To each his own I suppose.

I read this book after seeing the musical, and I was very disappointed. The idea for the story is wonderful (Wicked is my favourite musical) but the weird (and in my humble opinion, unnecessary) sexual undertones of this book ruined it for me.

The different sections of the book are radically different from each other. And that includes my enjoyment. Some amazing parts, some very interesting ones, some that totally bored me out.

Author has a unique writing style that can make it challenging and dry. But the themes are interesting enough to continue and finish the book. I think because the movies coming out gave me more incentive to finish the book wanting to know the full backstory. The themes are interesting and do cover Elphaba and all phases of her life. It does have me curious to reading his other books during the wicked years.
I still can’t say I loved the book, but it’s interesting enough. Also, the sex scenes are really wild and out of nowhere. Really startled me and made me laugh.
