Got a little confused sometimes and I knew it would be different from the musical but I didn’t realise how different

My own fault for trying to read the book that a musical that I love is based on. I wanted to squeeze out more love of the characters I already knew, and read a book that didn’t really match up to that expectation in any way. If you’ve chosen to read this because you like the musical - don’t.

Very disappointing. Such a slog to get through this book, for basically no payoff. The pacing is terrible. There are really great, quotable lines of dialogue, but the overall themes are lost in a haze of symbolism and lore that isn’t explained nearly enough to be engaging. Many of the major and most exciting developments take place off screen, which is a shame. The musical is a thousand times better.

This book was not for me. I have not seen the movie yet, or the play. I wanted to read the book first. It was hard to finish.

My rating is a 2

It’s a fucking Miracle that this got turned into one of the best musicals of all time. It’s crazy someone read this and was like “I bet I could make this better” and then proceeded to do so.

The story of the wizard of oz but told from the wicked witch of the wests point of view, you’d think it’d be a slam dunk and for a lot of people it is. I had the displeasure of reading this after having seen the musical and movie and therefor had expectations for what the story would be like.

And while it’s nothing like either outside of name and characters, it doesn’t give an interesting enough story to remain invested in. I feel like half the book was when she was a baby before shiz, we fly through her being in school, we escape into a smut book for the other half the book and fly through the story of the wizard of oz.

The cast of characters are detestable minus a few, and I feel like it has so much to say and nothing to say at all. It wasn’t all bad like I enjoy her relationship with boq and many other characters. I just wish the story was better. There are 3 other books and I’m going to give them a chance. But for now, I have a weird taste in my mouth.

Another thing I dislike is how offensive it is. Like little people, animals, people of color, women, mentally handicapped, disfigured people, everyone is catching strays in this book.

“She pulled out her breast to give suck to the creature” is not something I think I would ever read lol.

I was bored and didn't care about anything going on in the story

Hard to decide what I think about this--I understand what the author is doing and I think he does it well for the most part, but this was such a weird and heavy book. There were sections I really loved and sections I couldn't get into, but all of them were equally important and I can't make up my mind about whether I liked this more than I disliked it. This isn't an easy read, but it could be a worthwhile one, especially if like me you like character-driven SFF.
