From the second chapter this book had me hooked. It was NON STOP ACTION! And emotion! It was amazing!!
And the ending was absolutely PERFECT!!

This has been my second time listening to an audiobook for my enjoyment and I’m still not sure how to feel about it. I think I would’ve liked this book more if I would’ve sat down and read it. I was hooked in the beginning but I felt like towards the end, and in some places, it dragged. The Greek mythology was great, and it’s something I have to brush up upon, but I think it’s what made the story so wonderful with the authors knowledge of it. From what I listened to the writing was great, and I think it will be a book I sit down and read later on in life.

As someone who loves Greek mythology, I was very excited to find a book that was inspired by it. The concept is fresh and interesting enough to keep you reading to find out how things are going to end. One of the things that I love about this book is how diverse the characters are. There’s good character representation for BIPOC and the LGBTQ+ community.

While I did enjoy this book, one of the reasons I’m giving it 3/5 stars is the slow pacing throughout the first half of the book. I struggled through the first several chapters because there was not a lot of action. The action did pick up in the second half of the book and they were well-written. However, one of the things going against these sequences is how Castor was able to heal all of them afterwards. I never truly felt like the characters were in danger because of how often they were healed. The shock value of the fights went away and there was an expectation that Lore and others would be okay. The other reason I gave this book 3/5 stars is because there are a lot of the same repeating events. For example, Lore and her friends try to create alliances with several of the new gods which never works out to what they expect.

All in all, Lore has an interesting concept with a diverse cast of characters. It’s a little slow in the beginning chapters but picks up in the middle portion of the novel. However, there are a lot of repeating events that happen throughout the novel that you can begin to predict how the encounters will go.

On the verge of being 4 stars with this one. Middle/highschool me would have probably rated this a 5. While this book genre isn’t exactly my taste anymore, I completely understand the hype! One big issue I had with this book was having difficulties understanding everything going on all the time, with the heavy Greek mythology there were points where I felt completely lost. Other than that, was a fun read.

I think that the overall plot was amazing; I liked how modern times were intertwined with Greek mythology. I even learned about some myths that I had never heard of! I enjoyed the portrayal of the original gods and even liked the "new" gods! With that being said, I thought that the book lagged a lot; to me, it felt that not a lot actually happened, and some parts dragged on longer than they should have. At some parts, I felt like the flashback scenes were unnecessary, especially towards the end of the novel, because by that point, I had pieced the clues together. In the end, I enjoyed the book, the premise was cool, but I felt that the execution was lacking.

I had so many expectations... :(

Here we are with another popular book I didn’t enjoy as much as expected.

I floundered for the first hundred or so pages of Lore by Alexandra Bracken trying to acquire a grasp of the backstory and the dump truck load of information thrown at the reader. I assume if you have an in-depth knowledge of Greek mythology you may fare better than I did, but it took me a while to get the hang of the different families/gods and characters.

Honestly, I find the synopsis even a little hard to follow, but after I spent some time on the book everything clicked into place and I was able to relax and enjoy the story.

The one redeeming element of this novel are the twists, turns, and unexpected moments that keep the story interesting and surprising. If it weren’t for the unpredictable story line, this may have been a one-star read for me, which is unheard of in my reviews.

If you really enjoy Greek mythology and have a basic understanding going into this, I think you will really enjoy Lore. But if you’re like me and have zero background knowledge, there are probably better places to start in terms of novels inspired by the Greek gods.
