WHAT. THE. HELL. JUST. HAPPENED??!

I was cruising through this book, enjoying the slow-burn romance, the angst, the healing, and the finally happy couple. Salem and Thayer were going through this whole thing—the grumpy/sunshine tension, the age gap, the trauma, the whole neighbor romance thing—it was all working out. Even Salem’s mom was doing better, life was looking good. And then BOOM. That ending hit me like a freight train I never saw coming.

Like, excuse me, did I accidentally switch to a different book?! One minute, I’m basking in their happiness, and the next—absolute chaos, heartbreak, and me staring at my Kindle in disbelief. I had to reread the last few pages just to confirm I didn’t imagine that disaster. Micalea Smeltzer, why would you do this to us?! I need therapy (or the sequel) immediately.

Final thoughts? Proceed with caution… and maybe a stress ball.

Let me start this by saying that this is the first book in the series of three books. All of which I read in one day and omg this whole series is fathomable. The overall theme of the series is about trauma, redemption and understanding and finally healing. That being said I had some debate on how to review this and whether it should be in one post or three separate posts. After much thought and going back and forth I decided that I cannot do this series justice in one post so there will be three different posts all put up to encompass how great this series is. Without further ado onto part one.

The Confidence of Wildflowers by Micalea Smeltzer

I got in a bit of a slump and wanted to read a specific trope that was single dad so I took to the r/reddit romance recommendations and came across the suggestion of this book. In the recommendation it had the tags of being a single dad, sunshine x grump as well as age-gap. Reading over the description I knew that I had to read it as soon as possible. Luckily, it is on kindle unlimited.

The story starts out kinda slow but I was hooked by the end of the prologue. The characters are well developed for the most part. There are two side characters that could be fleshed out into their own stories but I found no problem since this book was very much just about the main two characters. There are quite a few spicy scenes that are explicitly written as well as one or two that are a fade to black I believe. I am grateful I got to read this on KU because there are some amazing quotes I feel I might have missed had other readers not highlighted them. During my reading of the book there were about three or four separate times that I was bawling during this book. Forewarning this book does end on a cliffhanger.

All that being said there are some trigger warnings that you should be aware of if you decide to pick this book up. There is mentions of domestic voilence, child abuse, father forcing himself on his daughter, cheating, death from cancer, child death, depression, alcoholism. Aside from the last three there is no explicit reading, just mentions.

Overall: 100/5 ⭐️

I really liked this book. I won't give any spoilers but the ending really through me for a loop. I was not excepting that at all! I couldn't wait to read the next book.
I won't give a synopsis because you can read that on your own. I thought this book gave you a little of everything. Friendship, lovers, heartbreak, happiness, pain, trauma... I went through all the emotions with this book.

This book will forever have my heart. I will never forget it. I don’t know why, but it just had that effect on me. And now I need to know what the heck happens!!

Even though I really enjoyed this book 85% of it I thought it was going to be a five star read. But the "plot twist" was very dark and took away a lot. I think the author could have gone down another path to break up the couple.
