this was.... interesting. some parts were intriguing while others were boring. its not a masterpiece of any kind but it also wasnt bad enough for me to dnf it. it was a very easy and fast read so i felt it was worth finishing it. im still gonna read the second book since i own it, but im not blown away.

I didn't really like this one. Not sure why just found the characters annoying, and the whole thing extremely confusing.

A very interesting and unique book.

I was really intrigued by this story set in a future world. In this world, the powers that be have imprisoned all of the "undesirables" in what is described as a paradise and mandated a world in which the "desirables" pursue their lives in an idealized simpler time.

One must suspend disbelief and accept what is presented to you. If you do, you will be able to ride the flow of this story, which asks so many questions about freedom and imprisonment; the perception of happiness; the necessity for manners and etiquette; the role of family; the pain of exclusion; the contribution of the arts; the importance of continued scientific discovery.

This is a book that would benefit a book group, because the avenues of discussion are many and allow for a myriad of interpretations and views. But, as it is a genre that mainstream readers often eschew, it might be a hard sell.

This book was frustrating and disappointing for me because I wanted to like it, I almost liked it, but a lot of what happens rides a strange and uncomfortable line between sci-fi and fantasy which can be done well but wasn't here. A lot of the fantastical elements seemed to have no real explanation in the world of the story, and there wasn't a strong central logical consistency.

Which to a lot of people probably doesn't matter, and I don't think it made it Bad, but I can't ever enjoy any story which isn't obsessively conscientious in its world-building so I did not enjoy this one.

I've had this book sitting on shelf for forever, but somehow never got around to it. Well, I am so glad I finally did. And I am thrilled to find out there's a sequel.

Wow. This book had so many unique, fun ideas in it. There was constantly action - the book takes place in about two days. The characters are urgent and believable (even the witchy, bitchy queen).

My only reservations: There was so much action that for a time, it got a little boring. There are benefits to having down-time in a novel, and this author didn't have enough of those moments in the beginning. And the last two pages didn't seem to close it up very well. I'm hoping that means there's a sequel?

Overall, 4.5 stars.
