I'd never read any of her fiction and I'm glad I finally have.

A clever and witty look at how religion raises people and one girls attempt to be herself with a fanatical mother.

Loved the humour in this, so many little moments to laugh at. The characters just being themselves and ignorant and not knowing. Very funny. The mother wanting a catapult for the cat for example.

I enjoyed the structure and how it was shaped by religious stories. Very clever.

probably very late of me, a lesbian, to read THE lesbian bible. i’m glad to read it now though. it’s strangely topical for me so i got a heightened experience reading it. it feels really personal to me, too. i get why this is such a queer canon. i’ve known that winterson is a beast, and this debut of hers was definitely something that will leave me reeling for a long time now. although i do think it has a slow start, the second half of the book is simply un-put-down-able.

i liked it generally. Though, I did find it odd how the author herself wrote her own book's introduction. And I also hated that long ass allegory in the Ruth chapter. It felt lazy.

i adore jeanette's monologues on stuff happening around her, so naive yet determined to fill in every nook w truth. the kinda book i truly enjoy reading!!
also, the whole winnett's story was heart wrenching. ik it's basically the simplified version of her story, but being written that way, u realized how ridiculously stupid ppl could be.
