lovely autobiographical fiction. the protag nist is someone well-rounded and carefully represented. I love the two-fold conflict with religion and the family and i think Jeannettes questions about god are very well expressed.

Really funny and easy to get into with some hard-hitting sections about family, religion and conditional love. Thought I’d be bored at the catholic side of it but the way it was written was so enjoyable

Maybe oranges are the only fruit… totally tragique because written on the body is one of the most gorg books in the world and idk what this was. But I guess we all contain multitudes

One of my friend's favourites; our tastes do not often align so I was pleasantly surprised. Really enjoyed the asides/general musings about history and storytelling. Planning on rereading at some point as I struggle with some of the more abstract aspects of Winterson's writing, and I can tell there's a lot more to this book that I have yet to appreciate.

Poignant, funny, and heartbreaking, Winterson writes in a way that speaks deeply to your soul. Beautifully explores the complexity of faith and sexuality.

Quotes:

"In the library I felt better, words you could trust and look at till you understood them, they couldn't change half way through a sentence like people, so it was easier to spot a lie."

"I miss God. I miss the company of someone utterly loyal. I still don't think of God as my betrayer. The servants of God, yes, but servants by their very nature betray. I miss God who was my friend."

nice read, but at times it was hard to tell how old the protag is meant to be
