This book started off amazingly but, towards the end, I was enjoying it less. I don't think that's because it got worse, I don't know the reason to be honest - I think I wasn't as invested and wasn't paying as much attention. I love books where nothing happens and this was no exception. That said, I probably won't think about it much and it didn't leave as much of an impression as I thought it would. I could absolutely see it being a favourite for someone else though.

There are so many great quotes in this book, so here are just a few of my favourites:

"'Do you think this is Unnatural Passion?' I asked her once.
'Doesn't feel like it. According to Pastor Finch, that's awful.' She must be right, I thought."

"Melanie is a gift from the Lord, and it would be ungrateful not to appreciate her."

"If there's such as thing as spiritual adultery, my mother was a whore."

"my mother had painted the white roses red and now she claimed they grew that way."

I went into this book thinking I would absolutely love it, which turned out to not be the case. Now, I will say I did really enjoy it, but it was not the 5 star read I was expecting it to be. I do think that if I were to read it again in the future, it may possibly become one, but I am slightly disappointed that it didn't become an instant favourite for me. Still, it was very much an enjoyable read and I'm glad to have read it. I definitely need to try out some more of Jeanette Winterson's works and see how I feel about them.

I really wanted to love this book. I appreciate the book for what it is and what it has brought to contemporary and queer literature but I just did not enjoy reading it. Not a huge fan of the stream of consciousness writing style

I loved Winterson's story, her descriptions and colorful characters. However, I found the experimental meanderings a bit excessive and distruptive.

If 2 and a half stars was an option, this would be it
