Un libro che mescola riferimenti autobiografici a storie inventate. Ho preferito i primi, specialmente le riflessioni sul crescere omosessuale in una comunità fortemente religiosa.

I understood maybe 70% of what was happening in this book, and especially did not understand the inserted stories covering Sir Perceval and Winnet, yet I couldn't put it down?

This story was basically the intersection of three topics I knew little about: the bible, 80s tech & culture, and british words -- so I spent my time alternating between, "Wow, I love the way Winterson wrote these lines!" and "What's a banana bar? Who's Daniel? The brits didn't have mandatory bathrooms in the 80s?"

It didn't take away my enjoyment of it and of following Jeanette's story the best I could, because I found her reflection on history as a poor attempt at compressing knotted story threads, as well as her struggle of reconciling her old and current lives, thoughtful and elegantly written.

I'm not doing her words and messages justice, so this warrants a reread someday.

A brilliant, complex story of a kind of bildungsroman. I love the way myth and fantasy take over from biblical tropes and weave into the story and the protagonist's life.

Surprisingly funny and readable, considering that it's a book about a lesbian growing up in the midst of a group of evangelical Christians. Very moving, too.
