sad lesbian core

I think I read this at the wrong time. I read Winterson's memoir, then this novel, and they are virtually the same book.

Although I enjoyed the style of her writing, with the interludes to Merlin and The Knights of the round table, there wasn't much else to keep me interested.

I found the book to be too focussed on religion, and not enough on her rebellion against it all. Maybe at the time, this book was considered ground breaking, for me it's not nearly challenging enough to the ludicrous beliefs and behaviours of the church.

The other issue I have is that Jeannette the character, although strong in not "repenting", doesn't seem to go much further. The reader doesn't know how well she's doing in her independent life, how stable she is in her decision and its effects.

She still sounds at the end like she did when she left, stuck on the limbo of not belonging in her community, but lost in the rest of the world as well.

I'm giving her work a chance, so I'm planning to read a few more of her books, but so far, I'm disappointed.

Really enjoyed the prose, but I think a lot of this went over my head, missing the church-y references.

Quite good autobiographical first novel. I wa suprised by how much I liked it.
