I really should like this more than I did. I feel like I need to read it another time or two to better understand.
I understood her feelings and the complex nature of sexuality and strict religion. But it felt like she came to her realization that she didn’t care what the church thought very easily. It didn’t feel like she struggled with the thought at all - which was refreshing for the time period, but also felt too… straightforward?
It was a very slow read for me - the kind of book where I kept checking how far along I was and how much was left. Some of the wording confused me or left me not really understanding, despite reading multiple sections many times. I think it may have resonated more if I listened to it, so I’ll try to find an audiobook at the library.
I really feel like the last two chapters could have been the entire story. I liked the insertion of Lancelot and Winnet’s stories in Ruth. The last chapter was the entire redeeming quality for me.
Throughout, I found myself craving more detail. I couldn’t really picture a single character and I am still not sure how old many of the characters were.
This book is due back tomorrow and many others have it on hold - I am going to try to find another edition or version to read it again. Otherwise, how am I a lesbian who doesn’t understand this novel the way everyone else seems to??
