On the Island of Vorn, Sorceline is under heavy suspicion.
After mythical creatures & students alike turn to glass, the scholars of the elite cryptozoology school begin to whisper. Secrets are kept, jealousies rage, loyalties are tested & friendships are made & broken & re-made. Sorceline, gifted or cursed, begins to question just who, or what she is and what others have been hiding from her all along.
As mysteries begin to tangle together, Sorceline & the others investigate their own leads, each one with their own theories, some coming closer to the truth than others, none of them really seeing what is right in front of them the whole time.
A who-dun-it of magical, mythical proportions, this one kept me trying to guess & predict the answers to numerous mysteries. I really enjoyed the illustration style, the dark & rich color palette (especially the night scenes with the fireflies... stunning). A secluded atmosphere adds to the suspense & the surprises of who's who made this a fun read.
Content Notes: Recommended for the older middle grade & up, or more mature reader, as the illustrations can be dark (mythical creatures being eaten by others, a gorgon with gruesome features, etc). The relationships in the book include crushes, and what could be interpreted as a negative portrayal of adoption.

My 8 year old really enjoyed this. The art is beautiful!
3.5 stars.
I was so bummed not to like this more. I think there was likely some pieces lost in translating it from the original French, as the dialogue and storyline felt a bit choppy. The premise is super interesting and I enjoyed the art style, but it was just really hard to follow and didn't develop the characters as thoroughly as I would have liked. I'm not sure if I will continue the series or not. I really like the idea of it, but I just don't want to continue to be disappointed.

I picked up this middle grade graphic novel last minute to finish off my October reading & it was so whimsical! It reminded me a lot of harry potter & fantastic beasts. I kind of wished they developed the characters and their dynamics more because when I started reading this I felt like we just jumped right into it without getting to know them first. The mystery aspect was the most intriguing part of the book in my opinion just because you are figuring a few things: 1. who are attacking the victims? & 2. who is Sorceline's mother/what is Sorceline's origin story? This is a good start to the series and what a cliff hanger! Hopefully, if I continue the story, I'll grow to love the characters more because so far I'm loving the plot more than the characters. Fun read during the fall time!
