As a huge Moshfegh fan, the pacing of her novels significantly improves after this debut. Her writing is what makes this book, as the characters are both unlikeable and unexciting. It is a testament to Moshfegh’s talent that she can write with such extensive foreshadowing and still pull off a plot twist of epic proportions. Her depiction of the silent strangulation of a New England town calls to mind Ethan Frome, and you wait alongside Eileen in the cold quiet for something to happen.

Dark, but not in an interesting way. Could be just my personal preferences, but I just wanted to reach the end of this and never go back.

This was compared to Girl on the Train but it’s not. The first three-quarters it is a character study of a sad, lonely, somewhat demented young woman. When there is finally some action, it’s mostly unbelievable and rushed through.
