Sometimes slow and steady only gets you second place, and that's how I feel about this pacing

“unlikeable” woman narrator

The writing is good but the main character is highly unlikable, the descriptions are gross and the plot is secondary to the characters. Not my cup of tea, that's for sure. I finished but only out of determination and I'm left feeling cranky and out of sorts.

This book is 220 pages of exposition but I still liked it.

This was an odd one. Moshfegh is very slow and deliberate in the first 220ish pages of the book until the plot unwinds and explodes suddenly and without warning. The novel would seem almost plotless for the majority of the book if the narrator, Elieen was not speaking from old age. Deeply disturbed and perverse.
