ottessa moshfegh has such a distinct talent for disgusting literature. no one does character annihilation quite like her. showing emotions so raw that u feel like you’re intruding on a private conversation, a vulgar and intimate diary that no one should ever read. eileen is truly one of the weirdest yet most captivating characters i have ever read.

however, despite it being only 260 pages, it took me a while to read it bc the storyline wasn’t always the most compelling. the writing was really good and i will read more of her work, but this wasn’t the best.

One of those books that is completely carried by its narrator. Although I think it was also one of those cases where the blurb spoils the book. The blurb mentions a "crime" that obviously never occurs, or is even hinted at, in the first 250 pages, meaning you're anticipating what it could be the entire time. Slightly ruins the reading experience.

I’ve noticed a theme with Moshfegh’s main characters: They tend to be unlikable, fat-phobic, classist, and have parental issues that would make Freud giddy. Nevertheless, I finished the book. On the whole it’s okay but has moments well enough written that it elevated it above just 3 stars for me. 3.5 stars

????? That was kinda pointless but interesting?

Det verste med denne er egentlig det faktum at den har potensiale, - det er så mye her som kunne vært bra. Eller, egentlig er vel det verste at den har sneket seg med på årets longlist. Skjønner ikke helt hvordan det har skjedd.
