The book read is fun an interesting mystery but the last 20 pages of the book is when it gets good. Definitely not typical horror more mystery. No strong female characters. Anti non binary representation

I don’t usually write reviews, but I feel the need to for this one. TW for r*pe. The book could have been at least four stars without the r*pe. It was unnecessary and the book exuded misogyny. That said I still want to read the sequel

Not as creepy as the film Ringu, but still an entertaining read. No ghosts crawling out of TV sets in this one. Instead of being a supernatural curse, Suzuki tries to give a more scientific/medical explanation for the killing VHS tape. The presented ideas are pretty wild and reality-twisting, but maybe because of that, I found the novel unique and interesting. Readers expecting a terrifying horror story with ghosts may find themselves disappointed; Ring should be approached as a mystery/crime novel with a paranormal twist. I also liked the weird friendship of the main duo. Why would Asakawa, the protagonist, be friends with Takayama, a man who claims to have raped several women? And why would Takayama, a successful university professor, be friends with Asakawa, a journalist who's clearly his total opposite? As terrible as they sound, the absurdity of their friendship made them almost likeable (and there are other things I won't spoil here).

Strong start, but never gets memorable after that. All the characters are incredibly unlikable. This is mostly a mystery book, but characters put in almost no work to gather a clue to the puzzle, and when they do, it ends up being weird and perverted, and not in an edgy way, it's just annoying and boring while solving nothing but acting like it did, has nothing to do with the story too. Nothing keeps you intrigued to keep reading, no sense of threat at all. The concept is better executed in both American and Japanese film adaptations.
