4/5. Wasn't sure if I'd enjoy it but the last two acts were amazing.

As a huge fan of The Ring/Ringu movie franchise, it was only a matter of time before I picked up the book to check out the source material, and while I recognise it be feel a little too complex for its own good, I absolutely loved this book!

The font size, pacing and writing style made this feel like a speedy page turner which I loved, and I was immediately hooked on the atmosphere, characters and story. I honestly could not put it down, it really catered to my specific horror needs, combined with fun crime and mystery elements.

The themes surrounding the fears of technology, trauma and abuse, and the cycle of a virus you can't control are present here. It definitely helped that I was already a fan going in, but Ring still exceeded my expectations somehow and I'm immediately eager to pick up the sequel, Spiral.

This is a “The Godfather” type situation where the popularity and familiarity of the movie has eclipsed the source novel, to the point that reading the book feels like reading a novelization of the movie and not the other way around. There are just enough differences in the novel to keep it from being wholly identical to the film, but they’re not changes for the better. The movie is better off without the jovial rapist sidekick (who we find out in the last twenty pages may not have actually been a rapist, which I guess is supposed to make it okay?) and the bizarre twist reveal that Sadako was intersex. The atmosphere comes through clearly, at least. Especially everything leading up to the main guy watching the tape is effectively eerie, so it’s not a complete dud, just not on par with the movie.
