I adored this book. It kept me on the edge of my seat. It gave you enough information to keep you guessing while waiting until the very end to give you the answers, while also leaving more questions. Not in a loose end way, though, just in that I’m still thinking about it now that it’s over. I can’t wait to pick up the next two in the series.

I like this less and less on every read. I still prefer the bio-horror turns the series takes compared to the Nakata adaptation, but it's hard to like a lot of the characters in this, the attitude towards women is uhhh very old fashioned.

Pro Tip: Don't read this alone at night.

Disclaimer, I am probably one of the biggest babies when it comes to horror, and have successfully avoided watching many of the horror heavy-hitters. However, I do love a good horror book, and thanks to a BOGO 50% sale at the Barnes & Noble, into my basket 'Ring' went.

The fact that I have never seen either the original Japanese film or the American remake made a world of difference in my experience.

The book jumps right what happens when you watch a 'cursed vhs', and the resulting investigation from our protagonist, journalist Kazuyuki Asakawa.

Something I can't stand when it comes to thrillers or mysteries are the massive leaps that characters make when putting clues together, but I didn't feel it that much during my read.

Promptly after reading the book, I Googled the plots for the Japanese and American films, and I will say that I'm glad the Japanese film follows the book, but the American plot doesn't seem as interesting as the original.

Now, I am incredibly aware of the problematic language and attitudes that surround rape and
intersex individuals
in this novel, I'm also aware that there is an almost 35 year difference between its publish date and the date I'm writing this review.

There is also the cultural aspect that one must consider when reading this novel. However, with that said, not everyone is comfortable reading this kind of material, even with these considerations.

Overall, I enjoyed the book, and will be watching the two adaptations as well as reading the sequels, "Spiral," and "Loop."
