Horror? Where? It was barely suspense at best. The only horror in this book was the misogyny and bigotry. Listen, I understand that Japan in the late 80s/early 90s was very much that vibe (and hasn't gotten much better since tbh) but the exact same ending could have been achieved without any of that included. I don't mind unlikable characters, human beings are not perfect irl and they shouldn't be in books either, but adding unnecessary stuff purely for shock value is gross. Definitely won't be continuing this series.

This is one of the very rare cases where I will emphatically say watch the movie instead of reading this, especially if you want actual (mostly) unproblematic horror.

I support women’s wrongs. Almost every guy in this was despicable and absolutely deserved to die. This also strengthens my resolve to stick to Sanderson, King, Scalzi, and the like when it comes to male authors.

Probably closer to a 3 1/2 than a 4, but I found this fairly compelling and different enough from the movie (both American and the superior Japanese adaptation) to be worthwhile. Its morals and politics feel firmly planted in the time in which it first released, and there are some uncomfortable aspects that go beyond the curse, but it's worth it if you're looking for something unique in the horror genre.
