Not as visceral as the film, and some of the gender politics has already not aged well, but readable, tense, does the job well.
It’s central metaphor is a virus, which reading it right now in the middle of a global pandemic is interesting.

I really enjoyed this and found it hard to put down. It's pretty different to the film in that it's more a mystery/thriller, whereas the film is horror. I had a little trouble with some of the Japanese names, mixing some people up, and mixing up places with people LOL. It's a fascinating story, the only downer is the translators' writing skills. They're no authors.
The scariest thing about this book is how misogynist every single man in it is!!!
But seriously, I liked the story, but I didn’t gel with the writing style. I’m sure at least part of it is just that it’s so very different than I’m used to, but it made the book not too terribly scary in like, a visceral way.

Very different from the film, even down to the meaning of the title; I was surprised. It was spooky in parts (and only a couple of times), but not scary. The writing was very ordinary and superficial, but the plot elements were clever and the novel overall was exciting and suspenseful.
The Ring as a movie scared the shit out of me as a kid and the book did the same to me as an adult. Some of the “perversion” was less than desirable though.

This fucking sucked because it could have been a really interesting and smart analysis of the way trauma ripples outward but instead it was about redeeming some shitty abusive men with transphobic/anti-intersex hero complexes.
