Very different from the movie and nearly as perfect. If you like the movie version I think you would enjoy the source material.

This was fantastic.  I'm honestly sad it's never read this sooner.  I kinda went into reading this with images of the movie in mind, and while similar, the book is definitely different, and I love it so much.
I can't wait to read the next books in the series now

I'm very much on the lookout for mysteries like this, where it's really not a murder mystery whodunnit kind of thing, but rather the whole premise is mysterious. There's plenty around but they don't seem to be given a common genre name, without getting detective novels mixed in (not that they're all bad). I personally don't think I would like things in the genre of "horror", based on the principle of making things scary, if it wasn't for the fact that it often ties into plots with the exact style of mystery I like. Like this.
The mystery here plays out wonderfully, with lots of twists. Fast paced and generally fun.
Biggest issue would probably be the occasional generally insensitive mention of sexual abuse, which would make it an annoyingly cautious recommendation. It's not like it presents an attitude that's an issue, really, it's just written in a way that can be (in my opinion off-topically) uncomfortable on a small number of occasions. It stands out (and has unfortunately occupied what appears to be practically the majority now of my review) just because everything else works so well though.
Best going in with as little knowledge as possible, as these kinds of things do generally go.
I'm looking forward to reading the sequels (I haven't heard if they're good or not).
