I am doing a horror marathon for October, this was one of my first reads and the approach is fascinating. Most of the book is an investigation, there are no jump scares, this is all together almost in the science fiction realm with a dash of the supernatural. I'm not complaining, as an aspiring scientist myself I deeply approve of the authors approach, and I look forward to the next book in the series. Trigger warning: some dated concepts of gender, gender expression, being trans and intersex. He's no J.K. Rowling, but his concept of gender is understandably dated.
Main Character's Best Friend Is a Rapist
While I pretty much knew what to expect having watched the movie (it stayed pretty true to the book), there was enough in it that was different to make it worth having enjoyed both the book and the movie. Characters that originally left me feeling meh (the main) or disgusted (his buddy) managed to completely or possibly turn around in my opinion and facets of them were revealed at different times of the story. Honestly, very much worth the read.

I liked the mystery of this story and how every part of the resolution is fleshed out and realistic. However, I wanted more of a horror element out of it. I’ll be reading the other two in the trilogy though.
did not finish at about halfway through - just not my cup of tea. Might be a better fit for those who enjoy supernatural/horror murder mysteries.

Akhirnya bisa ngantuk juga setelah sadar saya punya buku lain untuk membuat cengarcengir di sisi kasur... :)

2010 bookcrossing:
Read this cover to cover in one go - very addictive reading. Oh, the Japanese are good at horror. This is the first book in a trilogy and I am now keen to read the other two. I may write spoilers here, although with the release of all the Ring films, we all know the basic premise for this plotline. Which spoils the book a little as you're reading it, because all through the book, you know the main character, Asakawa is going to be fine because he's already passed it on, even though he doesn't figure this out until the very end of the story.
This is much more pyschological - you don't see the monster coming for its victims, so much is left to your imagination. The plot is a little different to the film, as far as I remember as well, but the basic bones are the same. Journalist Kamakura, based in Tokyo, starts to hear about sudden deaths of a few teens in Tokyo, and starts investigating why they all suddenly died of heart failure. In his investigations, he finds out that 7 days before the moment they all died simultaneously, they were sharing a log cabin in the mountains together... watching a really wierd video (you can tell this book is a few years old now because it's video tapes!). And there's a curse on whoever watches this tape....
Wonderful how it starts of set in Tokyo - for me personally - as it's like taking a little trip back there and imagining the places he mentions.
