Oh Louise, you're killing me! (no pun intended) As riveting as the rest of her books, but way too close to home.
Masterful suspense, that perfectly illustrates the destructive fallout that a murder investigation leaves behind. This book leaves you wondering, leaves you surprised and suspicious and sad to be in that place. It also leaves you with the most beautiful image of a treasure room: protected, hidden, full of art. Mysteries within mysteries.

The ending is brutal. Killed all the joy, jokes and atmosphere of the Three Pines.
Have to read this again, as I was not familiar with the characters when I read it the first time. Glad I did, it meant a lot more!!
These books are so intricately woven and very well written. I did not love the mystery this time.
If you, like me, left this one feeling bad and unsatisfied, read Bury Your Dead. It isn’t over. When you’re reading a long series, it’s hard to find specific information without spoilers so I’ll save you the google. It isn’t over.
I was disappointed in the ending, but I'll keep slugging through the series.

2.5 stars. Not my favorite mystery I've read recently, though I think it would have helped had I read the first Inspector Gamache novel beforehand to gain a better sense of the characters and setting! This truly was a slow burn of a mystery, lacking the fast pace and sharp twists I've grown accustomed to from most of the recent psychological thrillers I've read. Reminded me a bit of Agatha Christie--very deliberate pacing and lots of characters to tease out. Plus, I'm still not positive I buy the final reveal of which character was the murderer---motive seemed weak. But still a relatively enjoyable, albeit plodding, mystery.
My least favorite book of the series so far. Not much development of Gamache, in my opinion, and not much interesting happening overall in Three Pines.
